Capacity to scale to 300,000+ tonnes annually
Increasing to 50,000 ha
Yellow-breasted Capuchin, Banded Cotinga, Golden-headed Lion Tamarin & Wied's Marmoset
With over 95% of the Atlantic Forest, Brazil’s most endangered biome, already lost in southern Bahia, expanding private nature reserves will be crucial to preserving this ecosystem.
Serra Bonita in Bahia protects unique biodiversity, including the critically endangered Yellow-breasted Capuchin (fewer than 3,000) and Banded Cotinga (less than 1,500 remaining), both at risk of extinction without intensive conservation. It also safeguards flagship species, including the Golden-headed Lion Tamarin and Wied’s Marmoset.
The expanded reserve will reward smallholder farmers for conserving intact forests and encourage more shade-grown cacao.
